How to Improve Your Volleyball Serve: Mental & Physical Tips for Consistency and Power

As a professional volleyball player, one of the most significant aspects of my game that I’ve worked on over the years is my serving. For a long time, I struggled with my serve. I made constant errors and couldn’t find the right targets. But fast forward to today, and I’ve completely transformed my serve. I’ve led the Estonian league in aces and still hold both the career and single-season ace records at my alma mater. How did I make that jump?


If you’re a standing float server or a player who relies on a powerful jump serve, and you’re not training your serve as a mental skill, then you are missing out on the consistency that the best players in the world have.


1. Understanding the Situation: What Does Your Team Need?


Serving isn’t just about raw power or fancy techniques—it’s about understanding the game. You need to be able to read the situation and know what your team needs at that moment. Sometimes, your team needs you to be “the guy” and hit an incredible, high-risk serve that could change the tide of the match. Other times, they just need you to be steady and put the ball in play without errors.


Recognizing when the team is playing well—especially when the blockers are on fire—can be a game-changer. In those situations, the risk of going for an ace may not always be the best option. It’s important to learn how to adjust your serve based on how the game is unfolding. Serving isn't just about power; it’s about reading the game and knowing when to be aggressive and when to play it safe.


2. Physical Routine: Consistency is Key


Now let’s talk about consistency. If you want a serve that’s reliable, you need a physical routine that stays the same every time you step back to serve. That physical routine should be ingrained in your muscle memory so that, regardless of the game situation, your body automatically knows what to do. The physical constant routine will help your muscle memory with a more consistent toss and swing!


My routine has changed a little over the years, but it’s surprisingly similar to what I did when I was a senior in high school. I’ve always thought of serving like shooting a free throw in basketball. It’s an individual skill that isn’t determined by external circumstances. It’s about being consistent with your approach and giving yourself the best chance to perform.


A recent question I received was: “How do I go about making a serving routine?”


My best advice is simple: Grab the ball, step back to the baseline, and do what comes naturally to you. If you need to dribble the ball a bit, take a few extra spins, or even step a certain way before you serve—do it. There’s no right or wrong way to have a physical service routine, just as long as you do it consistently. Over time, your body will start to recognize that routine, and that’s when serving will become more instinctive.

3. Mental Routine: The Key to Staying Calm Under Pressure


While the physical side of your serve is important, don’t underestimate the power of the mental routine. In volleyball, as in any sport, mental consistency is just as important as physical consistency. It’s all about clearing your mind and staying focused on the task at hand.


Before every serve, I have one mental cue that I focus on. For me, it’s telling myself to “toss the ball into the court.”I’ve learned that many of my serving mistakes happen when I don’t toss the ball out in front of me—so reminding myself to do this is crucial.

In addition to that mental cue, I also have a visual reminder. I pick a spot on the ceiling to focus on before serving. Whether it’s a pole, a pipe, or any object that stands out, I assign meaning to it. When I look at that spot, I know that it's time to clear my mind, focus, and get ready to serve.


So, my mental routine goes like this: I step back, think “toss into the court,” and then look up to find my spot on the ceiling. This helps me clear out distractions and gives me a mental reset. I can then serve with focus and confidence.


4. Bringing It All Together


If you’re not intentionally training your serve as a mental skill, then you’re missing a huge opportunity to elevate your consistency and performance. The best servers in the world don’t rely on sheer power alone—they know how to stay calm under pressure, adjust their serve based on the game, and have a consistent routine that they rely on every time they step back to serve.


So, whether you’re a youth player just starting to develop your serve, or an experienced pro looking to take your game to the next level, the key is consistency. Focus on your physical routine, perfect your mental preparation, and understand the game situation in order to serve effectively.


By combining physical and mental routines, you’ll not only improve your serve, but also build the mental toughness necessary to stay calm and deliver when your team needs it most.
